How Abortion Pill Reversal Works

The abortion pill involves two drugs:

  • The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone that helps the uterus maintain its lining and support a pregnancy.
  • The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo or fetus through abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) introduces supplemental progesterone into the body to counteract the effects of mifepristone before misoprostol is taken. The goal is to counteract the effects of mifepristone by restoring progesterone levels, giving the pregnancy an opportunity to continue.

How Effective Is APR?

Although success is not guaranteed, studies have reported reversal rates of 64% to 68% when progesterone treatment is initiated after mifepristone. Research has also not shown an increased risk of birth defects associated with the use of progesterone.

Because timing is critical, APR is generally most effective when treatment begins within 24 hours, although successful reversals have been reported up to 72 hours later.

APR is generally not considered effective once misoprostol has been taken.

If you are unsure which drug you have taken or how much time has passed, contact the Abortion Pill Reversal Network right away.

Is APR Safe?

Progesterone has been used in pregnancy care for more than 50 years to help support pregnancy and reduce the risk of miscarriage. If you have a peanut allergy, be sure to inform your provider. Although some progesterone formulations contain peanut oil, alternatives may be available.
